Debian 13 setup notes

This is just a list of manual tasks that I still need to automate at some point. Left here as a pointer for future self

krew

To get the oidc-login plugin working in kubectl I needed to install krew first. source

(
  set -x; cd "$(mktemp -d)" &&
  OS="$(uname | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]')" &&
  ARCH="$(uname -m | sed -e 's/x86_64/amd64/' -e 's/\(arm\)\(64\)\?.*/\1\2/' -e 's/aarch64$/arm64/')" &&
  KREW="krew-${OS}_${ARCH}" &&
  curl -fsSLO "https://github.com/kubernetes-sigs/krew/releases/latest/download/${KREW}.tar.gz" &&
  tar zxvf "${KREW}.tar.gz" &&
  ./"${KREW}" install krew
)

And then install the plugin:

kubectl krew install oidc-login

Graphical boot in Debian

The packages were installed, but adjustments to /etc/grub/default and running update-grub2 are not automated source

Pulse Secure VPN on Debian Trixie

One of my clients relies on Pulse Secure for remote access / VPN. Using the Arch AUR page on this topic, I was able to find a Debian package.

To make the pulseUI command work, I needed an outdated library. To address this, I temporarily enabled the 'Bookworm' repos on my 'Trixie' system. I was then able to install the library and some dependencies. It did not provoke library dependency hell or system breakage. The VPN UI was tested and worked. Happy Happy Joy Joy!

The enabled and then disabled lines in /etc/apt/sources.list:

#deb http://debian.snt.utwente.nl/debian/ bookworm main non-free-firmware
#deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main non-free-firmware
#deb http://debian.snt.utwente.nl/debian/ bookworm-updates main non-free-firmware

The missing library was libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37.

Icaclient / Citrix

Just download the latest Debian Citrix Workspace package from the Citrix website and it works. Skip optional components during install

Displaylink driver

There is a Debian package in the Debian archives, but it is in the non-free section. So I enabled that via /etc/apt/sources.list and installed it. I still need to test this at the office when I get there.

apt-get install displaylink-driver
